If you have a telescope, and the skies are going to be clear where you live, you might want to get outside to somewhere fairly dark tomorrow night, April 28th, so that you can check out the planet Saturn.
Opposition vs Conjunction
Saturn reaches 'opposition' tomorrow, when it will be on the exact opposite side of Earth from the Sun (as opposed to 'conjunction', when it would be on the exact opposite side of the Sun from us). This will not only be the closest distance between Earth and Saturn all year, but according to astronomer Bob Berman, it should be the largest, clearest view of the planet in the past six years.
The main reason for this, according to Berman, is because Saturn's north pole will be tilted towards us, giving us the best view of the planet's rings in around 20 years, and also showing us a good view of the strange hexagonal cloud pattern around the north pole.
"The origin of this long-lived feature is utterly mysterious," he said in a statement on the Slooh Space Camera website, "and although its location at the very 'top' of Saturn makes it impossible to see from Earth through any telescope including Hubble, thanks to the sideways viewpoint we always have, it has given Saturn's North Pole a new notoriety. No doubt, some viewers will 'tune in' to gaze at Saturn close-up and in true color on this day of its closest approach, merely because of that baffling feature."
Look to the southeast after sunset tomorrow night, between the constellations Virgo and Libra. The bright star Spica (in the constellation Virgo) will rise first, and will be followed by Saturn throughout the night. The best time to see the planet is probably between 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. (local time), since that will be after the sky becomes completely dark, and before the Moon rises.
NASA released a video for the event, which shows some great images of Saturn, and what you can expect to see, based on what kind of telescope you have.
